The 100 most common words make up roughly 50% of all speech. The Saline Elementary Spanish program starts focusing on these words in Kindergarten, and builds complexity in vocabulary based on student progress in the program. Our curriculum focuses on comprehensible input, and the most frequently used words in the Spanish language. At first glance It may seem like all play as we act out stories, sing, dance, play, read and write in Spanish. However presenting these words to the students in a fun and interesting manner, helps keep their brains engaged in the complicated task of acquiring a second language. Learning a new language actually means your student is forging a new neural path in their brain! The program also focuses on vocabulary that is meaningful to students. In order to move information into long term memory in the brain it should be novel and interesting (the stories and silly movement in TPRS), meaningful (student focused and driven vocabulary), and rehearsed (the retelling of TPRS stories).
Kindergarten Students - In Kindergarten students learn Spanish through games, songs, TPR (total physical response activities involving the most frequently used words). Near the end of the school year Kindergarten students practice a well known story in Spanish in TPRS style. Topics include (but are not limited to, as students sometimes inspire topics): colors, numbers, greetings, feelings, weather, the calendar, and frequently used words in Spanish.
First Grade Students- First grade students review vocabulary and build on the frequently used word list started in Kindergarten, Students also begin acting out TPRS stories. First graders start to write short stories and comics in Spanish.
Second Grade Students- Second grade students finish the frequently used word list started in Kindergarten, Students also act out more complex TPRS stories. Second graders students begin creative writing in Spanish.
Third Grade Students- Third grade students review vocabulary and build on the frequently used word list started in Kindergarten, Students also begin acting out TPRS stories. First graders start to write short stories and comics in Spanish.

Supply wish listDonations are always welcome, we could always use the following items:
kleenex, bandaids, glue, crayons, pencils, and craft supplies. Special Items: A gently used toy or old kid furniture can quickly become the center piece of a new Spanish activity. Unique props help keep students engaged, and Spanish fun. If you have something like this you are considering getting rid of, please consider donating it to Saline Elementary Spanish. Amazon gift cards: There are always fun things to buy for the classroom on Amazon. Class pet replacements, games to play, new music, student seating, props for plays, my wish list always seems to be growing. Amazon gift cards will be used to purchase classroom items such as those lifted above. |
